Omega-3 Concentration Equipment

The short-path distillation equipment employs advanced vacuum distillation technology to significantly lower the necessary distillation temperatures.

This approach prevents the thermal decomposition of sensitive compounds during the distillation process.

Unlike conventional vacuum distillation methods, which struggle with high-boiling, heat-sensitive, and viscous substances, short-path distillation is highly effective for these challenging materials.

Designed for high boiling points and thermally unstable substances, short-path distillation is a premier separation technique widely used in the biochemical, petrochemical, food and nutrients, and light chemical industries.

It is especially suitable for concentrating Omega-3 fatty acids in marine fish oil, ensuring high purity and quality while preserving the integrity of the delicate compounds.

  7. Molecules interact with each other through mutual forces. The distance a molecule travels before colliding with another molecule is called the mean free path. This path varies continuously for any given molecule, but its average over time is referred to as the average mean free path.
  • Based on Molecular Motion Theory:
    • When a liquid mixture is heated, the movement of its molecules intensifies. Upon receiving sufficient energy, molecules escape the liquid surface to become gas molecules. As the number of gas molecules above the liquid increases, some return to the liquid. At a constant external temperature, a dynamic equilibrium is achieved where the number of molecules leaving the liquid equals the number returning, resulting in a state of balance.
  • Based on Free Path Knowledge:
    • Different molecules have different effective diameters, resulting in varying average free paths. Statistically, this means that after escaping the liquid surface, different molecules travel different distances before colliding with others.
  • Separation Mechanism in Molecular Distillation:
    • The process utilizes the principle that when liquid molecules are heated, they escape the liquid surface, and different molecules have different average free paths. Light molecules have a larger mean free path, while heavy molecules have a smaller one. By placing a condensation surface at a distance less than the mean free path of light molecules but greater than that of heavy molecules, light molecules condense on this surface, continuously escaping the liquid surface, thus disrupting their dynamic equilibrium. Heavy molecules quickly reach equilibrium as they cannot reach the condensation surface. This achieves the separation of light and heavy molecules.

Project Reference:

To develop a fractionation strategy for concentrating the effective ingredients of Omega-3 EPA/DHA fractions through 8 stages of short-path molecular distillation equipment, we need to consider the target concentrations for each fraction and determine the split strategy under the working vacuum of 0.1 Pa in continuous mode.

Given that the crude fish oil is in the Ethyl Ester form and the target fractions include various EPA/DHA ratios such as 18/12, 30/20, 33/22, 36/24, 40/30, our goal is to separate and concentrate these fractions efficiently. Here’s a proposed fractionation strategy:

  1. Feedstock Preparation: Ensure that the crude fish oil is properly prepared for distillation, including degassing and preheating, to optimize the efficiency of the distillation process.
  2. Stage Configuration: Configure the 8-stage short-path distillation equipment to accommodate the separation and concentration of multiple fractions simultaneously.
  3. Fractionation Strategy:
    • Stage 1: Focus on separating lighter components and volatile impurities from the feedstock. This stage may not contribute significantly to fractionation but helps prepare the feedstock for further concentration.
    • Stages 2-7: Divide the feedstock into multiple streams, each targeting a specific EPA/DHA ratio. Adjust the operating parameters such as temperature, vacuum level, and feed rate to optimize the separation and concentration of each fraction.
    • Stage 8: Combine and further process the concentrated fractions from stages 2-7 to achieve the desired EPA/DHA ratios for each target fraction.
  4. Split Strategy: Determine the split ratios for each fraction based on the target concentrations and the enrichment ratio calculated for each stage. The split ratios should be adjusted dynamically based on real-time process monitoring and optimization.
    • For example, if the target concentration for a specific EPA/DHA fraction is 18/12 and the initial feedstock contains 20% EPA/DHA, the split ratio may be adjusted to ensure that the fractionation process enriches the product to the desired concentration.
  5. Continuous Mode Operation: Operate the distillation system in continuous mode to maintain steady-state conditions and maximize throughput. Monitor key parameters such as temperature, vacuum level, feed rate, and product composition to ensure consistent performance and product quality.

By implementing this fractionation strategy and split strategy under the working vacuum of about 0.1 Pa in continuous mode, we can effectively concentrate the Omega-3 EPA/DHA fractions from the esterified fish oil while achieving the desired target concentrations for each fraction. It’s important to conduct pilot testing and optimization to fine-tune the process parameters and ensure optimal performance and product quality.
